Neiko to the recuse again!Jan 30, 2010
By R. Johns My respect for Neiko tools continues to grow. And the recent addition of their E-clip removal/installation tool to my tool box has only furthered my respect for the company and the tools which they produce.
If you are looking for an E-clip tool, you probably know there are very few on the market. I actually purchased this one made by Neiko because of my great experience with some of Neiko's other tools (sockets, etc.).
Their E-clip tool is well made and functions nicely as far as inserting and removing the blades into the handle. The blades are made from very solid, heavy gauge metal (using my digital caliper, I found each blade to be .080" thick, which is also known as 2mm thick :-) The blades have a nice black oxide type coating. One side is designed to cradle the E-clip in a little grove so you can insert it into its slot on an axle, etc. The other end has sort of a double foot affair that allows you to press the E-clip off without mangling it. On the red handle, which is made from nice, sturdy plastic, there is a little spring action metal button. You press down on that and it allows you to insert or remove the blade. The center circle you see in the blade is just for design. The smaller round notches at either end are where the blade(s) actually lock into place using the button.
Each blade is marked. The numbers are E-9, E-8, E-7, E-6. These may relate to E-clip sizes, but I am not sure. Basically each size is slightly smaller than the previous, which gives you a good range to select from. This tool appears to be designed more for larger E-clips, so I don't think it will work for very, very tiny E-clips. However, with smaller E-clips, you usually don't really need any sort of tool anyway.
In my case, I bought this specific tool in order to install and remove an E-clip on my Stihl 441 Magnum chainsaw. Stihl uses a thick metric E-clip to hold the clutch assembly onto the end of the crankshaft. The problem is that it sort of sits down in a milled out area in a washer that retains the drive sprocket. I'm sure that works well to keep the drive sprocket on while you are bucking up trees, but it makes removing the E-clip almost impossible. Anyone who has serviced their 441 (or other) Stihl chainsaw knows what I'm talking about :-) Before buying this tool, the removal of that E-clip on my chain saw pretty much would destroy the E-clip. In fact, I have a bag of the Stihl E-clips, because I found it pretty much impossible to remove the E-clip from the crankshaft without messing it up.
I'm happy to report, however, that Neiko's E-clip removal tool now makes taking off and installing the E-clip on the Stihl 441 a breeze. Well, maybe not a breeze per se, but at least I can remove it without bending the E-clip and having to throw it away every time. So if you happen to be looking at this tool because you need to remove the E-clip on your Stihl chainsaw, then I can tell you that you have certainly come to the right place; it's worth every penny!
A+ has to be given to Neiko for their E-clip tool. It's a fine addition to any tool box and an outstanding value for the money. It's heavy duty, well thought out and very well made. I'm very happy with my purchase and it's made servicing the chainsaw much easier for sure. Thanks Neiko!
UPDATE: I've added some user photos, in order to better show how the ends look and how they work as far as inserting and removing the E-clips. Hopefully the photos (and review here) will help a bit when it comes to deciding if this tool is right for you and/or if it will work for whatever application you may be using it for.
WorksMar 23, 2013
By DiverDan Needed a tool to install smaller e clips in a recessed area. This toll worked very well and did the job.
This tool is greatDec 09, 2012
By SMS Works as advertised. Low profile design alows to be used in narrow spaces. This is a real time saver. I would recomend to anyone who comes across e-clips on a regular basis.
Must have toolJul 26, 2012
By Ron Quality tool. A must have for the handyman, especially the mechanic. The picture does not really show the quality and heft. If you have ever played with e-clips, you will appreciate this tool. Does not fit small e-clips. Other wise I would highly recommend this be added to the tool box.
Easy tool to use for install and removalJul 09, 2012
By lahd4u I had purchased this tool not thinking I would be using it much but wanted to have it just in case, but have used it a number of times since I purchased it. I bought a motorcycle for my son, which we have been doing a lot of work on, and the bike has a lot of the clips this product supports. The ease of use was better than expected.
